1000 Words Opening Reception: a HUGE success!

Click here to see slideshow of reception photos.

Last night's opening reception for the 1000 Words exhibit was a tremendous success and we raised $940 (and counting) to purchase cameras for the kids. The framed prints sold for $25 a piece and demand was so high we had to take orders for unframed prints.

The fourth- and fifth-graders came on a bus from PS90 in the Bronx with their principal, teachers, and family members to our office in White Plains where they were greeted by employees and friends to celebrate their work. The children was so bright, proud, and gracious and many remarked how they were never going to forget this night for the rest of their lives.

During the reception, the kids were so excited to meet the people who admired (and bought!) their pieces and equally eager to read their descriptions and talk about their work.

Kim Snyder and Mary Sanford, the coordinators of the inspiring 1000 Words project spoke about the success of the program and each student was presented with a Pearson tote bag filled with a dictionary, a reader, and other goodies. In addition to the generous bag, each student was given a photo book of all the images in the exhibit.

We hope to soon post a slideshow of the work as well as photos from this exciting night.

Thanks, everyone!!

Wonderful update about the 1000 Words kids!

We had to share this email from one of the 1000 Words program organizers:

"You can not imagine the absolute delight in the faces of the PS 90 students when they saw the invitation cards. Mary and I went over to PS 90 this morning to hand-deliver the invitations. For some of the students, it took a moment for them to realize that their photographs were on the card. But the moment they noticed, their faces lit up - and their classmates surrounded them to see their images. And as an interesting aside - it was amazing how the students were immediately able to point out their own photographs in the card, even though they were taken 6 months ago and only a part of the picture was showing. I wish I could adequately explain how wonderful it felt to give these out - I imagine you will experience some of this next Thursday at the opening.

The teachers were thrilled and many of them will be coming to the opening. As well, several students are bringing one or more parents to the opening. The school has ordered a bus to go up to White Plains, and they anticipate that it will be full - it seats 55 people.

Your idea about using the proceeds from the show to purchase cameras was brilliant. I have started researching cameras in the $50 range and have come up with a few. I will keep looking over the weekend. I mentioned it to the Principal, and she plans on having a Photography Club started at the school as a result of the show. Our 1000 Words students would be the leaders - and we already had one teacher volunteer to run the group. The enthusiasm is beyond belief."
